Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It’s the 1996 law that (is supposed to) gives you more privacy concerning your medical records.

If you take your friend to the ER, for example, you basically have to drop them off and that’s all you can do. Unless you’re a relative, they will not communicate anything to you. I’ve had this happen to me. I had to locate my friend’s mother on a Saturday afternoon in NJ, so they could call her, tell her what my friend’s issues were and then she called me, all the while while I sat in the waiting room of the ER.
