Spies often target the people who are most desperate - people with, for example, gambling debts, or with a mistress on the side they don’t want the wife to know about. It may seem like a cheesy trope from a James Bond movie, but the desperation to keep one’s life intact and not be shown as a fraud to one’s friends and family is a deeply powerful motivator.
