Thiel brought in money, money that Hogan didn’t have to front, but Thiel basically handpicked Hogan’s legal team, who pointedly pursued a strategy that would leave Gawker’s insurers off-the-hook and extracted the most monetary damage from Gawker and Denton.

This wasn’t about Hogan being made whole, this was about Thiel using Hogan to get even with Denton and Gawker; while I think that Nick Denton is an asshole and yellow journalist in the worst tradition of the phrase, what Thiel and Hogan were able to accomplish was, while completely legal, something that can have long-lasting chilling effects.
