I don’t wanna re-argue the entire 60’s. The counterculture had a violent drug fueled side for sure. But the counterculture also played a role in exposing LBJ and Nixon’s lies on Vietnam (regardless of how you feel about the War, there’s no debating this.) Additionally the counterculture played a role in supporting civil rights, women’s rights, the rights of immigrant workers, etc.
It’s a hugely reductive mistake to paint the counterculture as nothing more than a bunch of drug addled Deadheads waiting around for the first Ben & Jerry’s to open up.
I disagree with the bolded parts. The civil rights movement predated the counterculture and had already won its most important victories by the end of 1965. “Rights of immigrant workers” was a change I consider a mistake. Rights of women I’ll give you.
