re: #30 Jadespring

And then there’s the church that I used to go to where the Reverend was gay, married and even had a kid. No one really cared except for a couple of people.

I used to work in space shared with a very weird, uptight Lutheran parish, who could barely stand the pastor their bishop had inflicted on them. She was female. They didn’t like that. She was married, to a man, which was OK, they guessed, but then she got pregnant, and it’s really hard to pretend that the pastor isn’t a woman when she’s pregnant.

They might have liked it that she was from the Old Country (Germany), except that they also knew through the grapevine that her mother was raised Jewish, and they didn’t like that. They also didn’t like it that she was sharing the common space with my employers, a gay, Jewish congregation. They wrote to the bishop and said that the church was going to be burned down by the neighbors if we were allowed to stay, and it would be his fault.

It was one of those spectacularly bad matches. The bishop was hoping that the pastor could drag this congregation kicking and screaming into the second half of the twentieth century before the twentieth century was over.
