I can’t remember ever seeing a campaign built on a foundation of lies and misrepresentations like the current campaign being run by Mitt. Its crazy. The only 2 things the base has latched onto is “you didn’t build that” and the “redistribution” meme both of which are complete lies that are undone by watching the sentences that preceded them. In an election cycle where the economy is as tough as it is, I would have thought the appeal to independents could have been at least competitive had it been based in reality. Instead, Mitt continues to have to shore up the base with idiocy. How can he possibly poll as well as he does?

Several reasons, the two largest of which are:
The sheriff is a n*, er, is black;
My team, right or wrong (aka yellow dog).

If the Republican party shatters (which if it happens I think won’t be till after the 2016 elections) it’ll form two competing splinters each claiming to be the “real” GOP - neither will want to join the ‘other team’ because of the two prior issues.

As a btw, I’m generally skeptical that the GOP will shatter. Simple reason is the way the rules, and more importantly the money, are rigged to go to the top two parties at this time. Split the GOP and suddenly they’re on a par with some other third parties all competing for that number two slot. One of the largest examples here is the question of who pays for the primary election ballots. If you’re Dem or Rep many costs are eaten by the states. (How much depends on the state’s rules.) If you’re the Libertarian or Constitution or Green or other third party you do your own ballots.
