California is not a country. It’s a state, that is economically and politically connected to other states. When California tries to redo it’s health care, it will be affected by, and affect, every other state.

If we had the political will to redo our health care, we could change it. But, since we’re so invested in our current system, there would be a huge up front cost.

It’s like a chemical reaction with a high activation energy. We’re at a pretty high energy state (expensive, inefficient), and the end point would be a lower energy state (cheaper, more efficient) but we’d have to input a lot of energy (money and turmoil) to go from one state to the other.
