Very chilling knowing how this all turned out. Here they were, Americans here and Germans there — living in a hopeful delusion. May this not foretell our future, especially given that there is no powerful nation like 1930’s United States waiting in the wings in our current world, ready to protect democracy or freedom. Of course, given our institutional racism and misogyny back then, our refusal to help those fleeing Nazi Germany, and too much of our press Nazi-friendly, we may not have seemed up to the role then either.
