My favourite author claims that Western Civilization is a giant, heritable inferiority complex. We’re descended from the barbarians that destroyed Rome and have been trying to reclaim Rome’s mantle ever since.

He’s believes that’s why so much of our architecture is Roman. It’s why empires claiming Rome’s legitimacy name their rulers Kaiser or Czar.

He says it’s why we are so aggressive in our desire to ‘fix’ other cultures, to ‘ennoble’ them, to ‘civilize’ them. We won’t be satisfied until every one acknowledges our greatness, recognizes us as Rome reborn.

There is, I think, some merit in that observation.

Hmmm. If true then Trump is the perfect avatar of that cultural inferiority complex.
