Someone was commenting on NPR lately that there is nothing intrinsic to mining or manufacturing jobs that makes them “good” jobs. It’s just that those people got together, formed unions and worked for better wages and benefits. If we want, service sector jobs can be “good” jobs too.
This is both obvious and easy to miss at the same time.

Precisely. Which is what makes the response by so many Trumpers to the idea of a $15 Minimum Wage so galling - you know, where they gleefully post pics of automated kiosks at McDonalds?

I realize that what they’re doing is trying to make their own shitty lives seem better by shitting on somebody else, but seriously, leaving aside the sheer inhumanity of it, we’ve been making rich folks richer and poor folks poorer for 35 years, and the middle class is dwindling, and compensation is stagnant or worse. CLEARLY this isn’t working.
