Being Poor

Been there, done that, and yes, it sucks. Still not rich (but honestly, I’m not sure I would know exactly what to DO with “rich” anyhow).

A few years ago, in December, some co-workers and I were leaving a local eatery after lunch. Coming out of the nearby “dollar store” were two people, parents I’m sure, with 2 carts LOADED with toys. Those dollar store toys last about a day before they break or come apart.

I knew, I just knew, that these parents wanted their kids to have a LOT of presents under the tree, and so they spent what money they had on a LOT of cheap stuff rather than a few good things. And I can’t blame them, the look on a child’s face when he sees an overabundance of presents under a tree is priceless.

I just about broke out in tears. I had a $100 bill in my wallet; I walked over, asked how many kids they had, we chatted, and I gave them the $100 and asked them to please buy ONE nice thing for each kid. Of course I don’t know if they did it; but if those kids had even a slightly better Christmas, then I am happy.
