Not to mention that this was an unusually vicious war.
The American Civil War wiped out 1.5-2% of the nations population at the time in 4 years
The Libyan Revolutionary war killed .38-1% of the nations population in just 8 months and a week.
I simpler terms, they were doing demographic damage much quicker in Libya than in our case.
Edit: And the US Civil War is an usually bloody one in its own right.
