Yes, I know. But I’m explaining THEIR reasoning.

I’ve been on the ugly side of that stick for over three years now. It’s an outgrowth of the calvinistic perception that exterior worth reflects interior value.

That if you’re in trouble it’s God’s way of saying you’re bad and need to make better of yourself.

Pushed to defend it, people don’t. But it’s a pervasive default in our culture.
