I’ve known good HR departments. That you run into so many isn’t usually the fault of the workers there, but the specific tasks assigned to them by the company. To far too many companies, HR departments are just there in order to limit the liability of the company.

But at Valve, for example, the HR people are actually goddamn masters at their job, helping people actually grow in their roles and helping to create the great culture that they have there.
