There were other bits of information about him floating around for a couple of years, but nothing related to a specific plot or plan to attack until the last couple of months.

The most pressing issue at the moment is: why, given the seeming wealth of information tying him to unpleasant groups and possible activities, was he granted a visa to visit the US?

All true but we should probably keep in mind the mini battle the dems and the admin decided to pick with the CIA after the election. No one in the CIA is going to stick their neck out for administration they don’t believe has their back if they turn out to be wrong.
