Back in the bad old days, especially pre-Enlightenment, many cultures held that ordinary people couldn’t even really think right. There was no sense that their opinions even mattered one whit. To the extent they did have opinions, ones that went against the group tended to be very directly punished. That’s why the early printers were subject to such persecution by the state.

I can see no way, at all, that your argument makes any sense. Yes, it’s true people can just post on Stormfront if they want and never get challenged. That doesn’t mean they get no other information elsewhere; hell, a ton of the posts on Stormfront are about how the mass media totally got some story wrong.

I agree totally that people can choose to isolate themselves. Where you’re completely and utterly wrong is that mass literacy has aided this.
