HHS Sebelius is resigning. She’d been at HHS since President Obama took office in 2009. Not surprising that she’s resigning at this juncture; ACA is launched, and turned out to be successful in reaching millions of uninsureds despite all the foulups with the launch.

If this was a horrible law and an impossible task to make the ACA work, then it speaks volumes about her success. Yes, Majority Whip Cantor, it’s successful.

Millions who had no health insurance now have affordable insurance, and millions more are getting health insurance coverage via Medicaid expansion.

The GOP opposes both. They’d rather see millions go without insurance at all than admit that they’ve been on the wrong side of history.

The GOP wants people to think that they’ve got an alternative to the ACA, but running the numbers finds that it will insure fewer people and cost even more - the epitome of a nonstarter. It’s vaporware, but it’s all the GOP has, because their leadership will have to admit that they can’t repeal ACA anytime soon. Not in 2014. Not in 2015. Not in 2016, and the earliest will be 2017, and by then it’s quite likely that the ACA will be so successful that no one will want to touch it except as to expand coverages further (expand Medicaid to those states that didn’t, and to expand the income levels to pick up a greater share).

Of course, the Tea Party hacks will want to burn it to the ground.

In the meantime, the President will have to nominate a successor, so watch the GOP do all it can to thwart the nomination/confirmation process. Or, they’ll tie the confirmation to another issue (like debt ceiling or spending on health care) to get their way.
