Yes, that’s why I wouldn’t make a good political adviser. I’d want the candidate to take a stand, for real. This is deeply unpopular in our dysfunctional political system.

That’s because taking a position means being willing to defend it or, when it becomes untenable, admitting that it was a bad idea to support it. You see it in the way the GOP is slowly trying to move past anti-SSM positions as party planks. They’ll speak the pablum to supporters behind closed doors going forward, but don’t expect it to get a lot of press when the party writes up its platform in 2016.
