$31 million in direct funding from the feds so far, but ACORN has had access to a whole lot more than that over the years. It receives funding from multiple state and local sources, and its involvement in various federal affordable housing initiatives means that they’re point on those programs. Without the imprimatur of the federal funds, states would be a whole lot less likely to provide similar funding.

Much of those functions should go elsewhere - to programs that do a far better job in providing affordable housing and vetting not only those who work for them, but those who receive the funds to buy homes - like Nehemiah Housing.
