If predictions are correct, the GOTP will have their largest House majority since the 1920s. They’ll have the vast majority of purplish swing districts. Talk about overweight—it will be virtually impossible to hold this for long. Still they might have a majority for a decade or more, just as before.

But they’re likely to overplay their hand, and assume that this victory is a mandate to move far right on all sorts of things. Of course that’s a misinterpretation of what’s happening, as a large majority wants not far right policies but actual cooperation between WH and Congress. But cooperation isn’t in the GOTP lexicon. If anything, they’re proud of not cooperating on anything.

A decade or more?

I bet they’ll overplay their hand in time for Obama’s re-election in 2012….
