If Joan is talking about “negative stereotypes,” or some such crap, I would remind her that Stepin Fetchit got his start playing the same character he played in Hollywood in black vaudeville; that Hattie McDaniel, accepting her Oscar for Gone With the Wind, said, “I’d rather play a maid than be one”; that white film producers and directors put black performers into their films because they were good box office; that blacks were not the only ethnics to be subject to “negative stereotypes”; that the negative stereotypes of today are perpetuated by black people in entertainment who feel it incumbent upon them to act like thugs.

I always thought the recent WaMu commercials with the young yuppie good looking black guy and the fussy old white bankers was enormously racist.
