That’s an extremely interesting point. I wonder if it comes down to adapting verses designing? Get something built that does one or two of your core design requirements right, and then modify that as needed? Basically Rapid Application Design applied to military hardware…

A detailed study of successful projects that served outside of their original design requirements compared to projects designed to fill that role that ultimately failed would make a neat Masters for someone. What’s the difference between F-4 procurement to the F-35?

The F-35 is very much an “all can do” design with several major variants in the F-111 mold. It is smaller and lighter, though, which may give it a better chance of working out. It will have taken 20 years to develop by the time initial operational capability is achieved.
