I always liked Sullivan’s explanation that conservativism, properly understood and practiced, was really more of a disposition than an ideology. More of a sense that change should mostly be gradual and with an eye toward addressing unforeseen consequences when they present themselves. Much of (post)modern conservativism is really reactionarism, I think. And dangerous because it seeks to restore a world that didn’t truly exist and to the extent it did was obviously less free than today

Sullivan was plenty reactionary when he said this about those of us who opposed the war in Iraq:

“The middle part of the country—the great red zone that voted for Bush—is clearly ready for war. The decadent left in its enclaves on the coasts is not dead—and may well mount a fifth column.”

Sullivan proved himself to be as IGMFY conservative as the worst wingnuts. He was just smoother about his delivery.
