The other fantasy I’ve heard is that the military, either out of agreement with the rebels or due to inability to attack their fellow Americans, would refuse to obey orders to put down the rebellion and allow it to march all the way to D.C.

In 30 years I saw a lot of virtues and vices in our military. Their one overriding virtue is that they will never, never, turn their weapons on the constitutionally-elected government.
