re: #541 Obdicut

Totally.

I belong to the facebook group for a political advocacy organization for marijuana legalization. Does that mean I’m a big stoner who’ll not show up to work? No. It means I rationally think that taxing and legalizing marijuana is a better idea than criminalizing it. But since that’s on my FB, an employer could see it.

Likewise, I’m a ‘fan’ of Planned Parenthood. What if the hiring manager is anti-choice?

Facebook makes it very easy to get the information that is supposed to not be asked in interviews— age, orientation, health status, etc. This is a terrible idea.

If you put it on the internet, it’s no longer private.

I don’t like it, but that’s been the reality for years.

Almost ten years ago I made an offhand comment in a personal email to a co-worker. About a month later I had the joy of facing a review board that was assembled on the basis of that comment. That’s when I learned the rule.

fwiw, I think we’re headed to a private/public divide that boils down to:
Info about you from YOU is public. Info about you from OTHERS is private. The exceptions to both cases shall exist only when explicitly stated or required by law/regulation.
