And again: That has always been true as well. I’m not sure what you’re not understanding about what I’m saying. The state has used various means to coerce people into believing what it wants, but on their own, people have always been able to self-censor and refuse to listen to the truths about their own pet ideas, as well. It is much harder to do in the modern day when you might, say, post something on your blog about AGW and then have someone post a link to the reality; you can still scorn it and deny it, but you have still actually seen it.

Why do you think that self-censorship is a new phenomenon?
