And really, the more I hear from people who talk like that, the more I think they just rolled up entire pagan pantheons of wrathful, punishing gods and goddesses into one singular convenient package.

A one stop shop for lightning bolts, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, plagues, locusts, woes and tribulations ad nauseum. Why worship a variety of gods who have specific, individual areas of expertise in human suffering when you can worship one, big, Wal-Mart type god who can dish out all manner of suffering for a fraction of the prayer.
