So far. Ssempa and his backers have pushed their execute-gays bill as a test case for how they can influence the Ugandan government. It remains to be seen what else they’ll try and legislate, how their followers will react if their attempt to control the government fails. There’s also a question about how much of current anti-gay violence in Uganda is sole actors versus group cooperation.

The Ssempa Christianists aren’t likely to act like the LRA because their violence would be internal to a community they’re trying to control and maintain, rather than involving raids, abductions, and razing of villages like the LRA.

They haven’t even been able to get the bill debated on the floor of Parliament, much less get a vote on it. And the current iteration of the bill has had the death penalty provision removed, likely to give it a chance at passage.
