I’m not so sure of that. Bad apples everywhere, of course, but I think more attention was brought to the matter precisely because, among Christian groups, the Catholic Church has a reputation for being ethical and moral. The shocking nature of the crimes of these few priests was what made it stand out so much.

Think of the shock if, every so often, a Lubavitcher rebbe were found drunk on Yom Kippur, eating bacon. The shock of the thing would be such as to cast doubt and suspicion on the whole lot of ‘em.
