The reason the spying story is believable is because it smacks of desperation and Netanyahu has been acting absolutely desperately and erratically of late. The election flip flop on the two state solution being a prime example. That the story seems not only plausible but actually fits well within that context and pattern of behavior is by itself deeply unsettling.
