Also keep in mind that the mothers of these 20-something Iranian girls were themselves “free and westernized” during the Shah era of the ’60s and ’70s — which, despite the secret police and all that, allowed women equal social rights, and they walked around Tehran with no hijabs, full makeup and hairdos, no morality police, etc. It is within very recent memory.
