The people in charge of the departments (the mayor for local pd and a Sheriff for county) are elected offices. The manner in which they handle their jobs is controlled directly by voters. That doesn’t mean it’s always the best person for the job but at least the majority of voters have their say in who/how the departments should be run.

So what? I mean, you’ve agreed for a long time that having a prosecutor be a political office is part of what corrupts that; why is suddenly the political nature of the mayor a great thing in overseeing the police department? Why the sudden reversal?

This has very little to do with what you were saying. It’s an entirely different argument.
