I think the take most likely is Trump wants to entirely destroy Captain Crozierā€™s career.

Crozier committed the unforgivable sin: He made Trump look bad (whether he released that letter to the press or not).

The one thing you can depend on is Trump always seeks revenge. Heā€™s like a revenant.

Crozierā€™s career is already over. He rose as far as he could on merit and time-served, to get that first start would require Modly as Acting SecNav and the Joint Chiefs as a whole to pass the recommendation on to Trump, who then would have to pass it to the Senate for a majority vote. Thereā€™s no way in Hell that Modly would ever recommend Crozier if he wanted to taking that ā€œActingā€ off his resume. Assuming Crozier is allowed to continue serving, heā€™s never going to command a ship again. Heā€™ll likely serve out the remainder of his 30 years in some posting at the ass-end of Nowhere, then quietly retire from the service with his pension and benefits.

As for the investigation, the purpose of it is pretty clear: Keep Crozier quiet until after the election or until they can find an excuse to shit-can him, whichever comes first. Last thing Modly wants is Crozier to put in his papers, and then walk from the Pentagon immediately to the media to tell his side of the story absent worry of a court martial. Which really says to me that they know he didnā€™t ā€œleakā€ the letter, that someone in his chain of command did, and so now theyā€™re looking to justify all the shit theyā€™ve already said about him.
