Mine didn’t quite qualify as widow—she didn’t get a ring. Thus no Gold Star, no GI insurance, no folded flag, no SS. She was a Practical Nurse, which was rated as a domestic servant for SS purposes. We ate most days, weren’t very good about paying the rent.

my mom got screwed out of her widows pension from US Steel, where my dad had worked for 30 years…she later found out about a class-action suit and got a settlement and a small monthly payment after that, but it did not replace the money we needed in 1967. Without SS, we would have been out on the street.
