re: #568 Slumbering Behemoth

It’s “Yes”. Telling a kid “You can’t have that because I say so, end of story” does not work. Ever. It only further peaks their interest in the thing(s) you dislike, and creates an unnecessary rift of resentment for both parties.

When it comes to the kinds of things we have been discussing, like taste in music, it’s conversation not domination that works best. Domination only leads to mommy issues.

When it comes to kids acting out, however, that is different.

When it came to music, my parents let me listen to whatever I wanted, as long as I was still kicking ass in school. I had friends whose parents came down hard on anything they listened to and tried to forbid it, (usually 80’s thrash for my friends, sometimes some vintage gangsta stuff like NWA) but they always got what they wanted, they just had friends dub it for them, unmarked cassettes in my childhood were easy to hide.

Tom Araya once remarked that they sold concerts out, out of proportion to their album sales, because kids don’t want the evidence of a Slayer record around the house, but they can sneak out to the show.
