I fail to see how this is bad advice.

The advice is fine, in isolation. Some self-awareness on the part of the Iowa GOP would cause them to realize that the set of people that care what the Iowa GOP has to say on any subject includes a disproportionate number of bug-eyed gun nuts, who should not have their delusions amplified by a quasi-official source like the Iowa GOP.

Of course, this may have been taken into account, and the Iowa GOP has determined that clashes between law enforcement and random civilian nuts would be politically useful.
