My Sophomore English teacher thoughtfully printed out all the “dirty bits” that were cut from our copies of Romeo and Juliet. They were helpfully indicated in the book’s text with a line of asterisks where something had been eliminated to preserve our purity of mind. She also said she’d be happy to explain any references we weren’t familiar with. Therefore, “The bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon” is right up there in my memory along with “Thus, with a kiss, I die.”

Our seminary was “delicate” about stocking the library, but Lysistrata slipped through. I mean, who reads the classics?
