My favorite in the last couple weeks was a woman who tried to tell me that this group of immigrants was “different” from the Vietnamese who fled to the US after the fall of South Vietnam. How did she reach that conclusion? Because she knew a Vietnamese family who’d come over and their kids learned English, so that was proof that they were “better.” Yeah, they still ran a shop selling Vietnamese food and they still lived much in the traditions of their home country, but they knew English and that was the proof of their “assimilation.”
