Bush did try to privatize social security. They aren’t exactly polar opposites either.

They’re not polar opposites since they have some similar policy positions. However, Perry, unlike Bush, is far more ruthless and calculating.

Bush, I think, was genuine in his religious beliefs. Perry, OTOH, wrapped himself around the nutbags at his recent tent revival to make himself the preferred fundie candidate. In his mind, if he’s got all those fanatics on his side, he has the evangelical vote locked up. Appearing alongside them doesn’t hurt him at all.

Perry is also a graduate from the same Debates Are Not An Option school that Palin and Sharron Angle and others in the GOP are from. He has no interest in talking about ideas openly or in doing unscripted events. Bush at least had the capacity to debate his electoral opponents.
