I don’t think there’s enough Republicans in Congress stupid enough to go forward with a government shut down in an election year… and that’s before you factor in an ongoing impeachment process.

Well, it’s still a year away from the election, so that, specifically, is not going to be a factor IMO. But “stupid enough”? - these are Congressional Republicans we’re talking about: it’s more a case (again, JIMO) of “desperate enough”.

However, I’m also thinking that a “blackmail” shutdown WILL backfire badly on Trump and the GOP: if for no other reason that it will be able to be spun as, fundamentally, an admission of guilt: and MAY just be enough to push public opinion up past the 60% “impeach and remove” level that would likely spell doom for the last of GOP resistance.

Not that the Senate would vote him out, necessarily….
