The whole thing about Christianity being so peaceful and loving strikes me as bizarre as well. One of the things that made me reject it as a little kid was all the mass murder of innocents and stuff. Violent as hell.

Me too. The Old Testament is what turned me away at a very early age. Then later when I realized the tale of Noah and the tower of Babel was actually just a convenient way to explain rainbows and why there are many languages like any other culture’s mythos try to explain things that can’t be explained yet, I was beyond “saving”, as they might put it.
