I’ve always been amused by the notion of the revolutionary war that we were going up against an absolute monarch. I mean that’s no defense of King George III but we weren’t going up against a monarch like Louis XVI, Catherine the Great, or Frederich the Great either.

Language can be misleading. We have the American Revolution, the French Revolution and the Russian Revolution all called revolutions, but the American case so greatly differs from the the French and Russian cases as to be really a different thing.
