The original “red neck” was a coal miner on strike who wore a red bandana.
Learned that on the history channel!
I seem to remember that the term goes back a lot farther than that, it was used to describe the Scots Presbyterian “Covenanters”, who signed their religious manifesto with their own blood and wore red bandanas to remind people of that fact.
But these were the very ancestors of the coal miners who went on to strike in the Appalachians.
