Broadcasting in the US required, because the government required it for a license, for the users of those licenses to serve the public good, as the radio spectrum is a limited asset that all must share for the common good.

But that was then, and today we are enlightened private employees of our glorious corporations and we know better.

That was before cable and satellite stations. When the system used to carry the signals is Comcast or DirecTV, there is no real scarcity. Since there is so much more bandwidth, the old arguments of scarcity no longer apply. So now a news show can DERP to its heart’s contentment, and it need only fear business competition.
