My superficially coherent theory is that Perry is aiming for the VP slot at this point: the party is going to saddle Romney (or perhaps Gingrich: his Catholicism is only slightly more tolerable than Romney’s Mormonism) with a bona-fide fundamentalist socon running mate, so he’s buffing those credentials.

And it worked so well last time, saddling a mainstream candidate with a far right dumb loon.
