re: #534 Sergey Romanov

Even better:

*facepalm*

Eh. Irving was writing about Rommel for the normal reason that has made Rommel the most written-about WWII German general: Erwin Rommel did not serve of the Eastern Front. Rommel wasn’t some nonpareil: Fritz von Manstein and Heinz Guderian were also superb tactically and even better that Rommel strategically. But, like any German leaders of large formations on the Eastern Front, they were also both war criminals. They enabled, and in von Manstein’s case actively ordered, murders of civilians, mistreatment and murder of POWs, and genocide. Rommel is chosen for emulation because he does not bear the taint of the Eastern Front.
