We used to call ourselves the Land of the Free while whipping the skin off the backs of black people and shooting American Indians in the face. Now we just imprison a shameful percentage of the black population and try to make it so that a white person committing a crime on American Indian land can’t be tried by a jury of American Indians.

So we’ve made progress.
