My story of the day - Not On My Watch!
Got a family of pigeons living on my garden planter outside of my window sill (no plants - just pigeons and poop). About 8 of them. 6 adults and 2 adolescents. A mama has been sitting on two eggs since I moved in two weeks ago. Talking to my wife during the day she told me she thought one of them had hatched. Turns out the egg had actually fallen between the planter and our outside wall about five feet below onto a small ledge After further investigation I found there were a total of three eggs down there. After 3 or 4 unsuccessful contraptions here’s what worked. I poked a hole in a 44oz cup and tied a rope to it. Put some toilet paper in the bottom and tied it to the planter rail so that the cup hung just below the lip of a small 1.5” gap in the wooden slats below. Then I used the angled end of a tape measure to pull one egg through the slats and into the cup. Used the metal pipe of the vacuum cleaner to push the other two. Pulled the cup up and voila, I’m a hero for a day! I’m not sure if any of them will make it since two of them had small cracks that didn’t go through the filmy layer below the shell. One of them was pretty solid all the way through. I’m guessing it was the one that fell today so I’ll be rooting for him for the next few weeks.
I couldn’t let those eggs just stay down there now could I?!
