I recently heard that Richard Pryor was originally considered for the sheriff part played by Cleavon Little. But he was a relative unknown, too edgy.

Hard to believe, but a classic comedy—one of the all-time greats—could have been even better.

But, Pryor did co-write the screen play with Brooks and others…the reason he didn’t play Bart was the studio brass was seeing him getting wasted all the time and thought he was nuts.
