That is a really good point, but the problem is nobody else is really stepping up except Cheney. I really believe that a big reason for W’s low popularity was his unwillingness to smack back. I put that off to he being a gentleman & wishing to remain presidential. It wasn’t seen that way though, the perception was that his detractors must be right.

I agree. I’m not saying he’s wrong; in fact, I give him very high marks for demanding an even-handed release of classified information in place of the cherry-picking being indulged in by the Administration. It’s just that he’s not the best spokesperson for the job of criticising the Administration on security matters; he’s far too easy for the Dems to refute.
